Student Development
St Patrick's College is dedicated to the development of the whole person. This belief is outlined in our Mission Statement. Students in the early adolescent years benefit from this well-rounded approach to education and develop as confident, mature and responsible young adults with an excellent community outlook.
Spiritual Development
St Patrick's College is a Catholic college where the values of the Gospels underpin all that we do. The College strives to integrate these values and the teachings of the Catholic faith into daily life.
As part of the curriculum, St Patrick's College offers a formal religious education program approved by the Bishop of the Rockhampton Diocese. Our Catholic faith is also lived out through daily prayer and various liturgical and Eucharistic celebrations.
The College also maintains a close relationship with St Mary’s and St Patrick's Parishes and important school events and ceremonies are often celebrated in the nearby parish Church.
Social & Emotional Development
The middle years of school are extremely important to the social and emotional development of our young people. At St Patrick's College we provide an environment in which students can learn to take calculated risks, make informed decisions and take responsibility for their own actions.
Middle adolescence is a time for students to sort out who they are, what their life is about and who is their ‘neighbour’. The peer group becomes integral and learning how to relate to each other and to adults is extremely important at this time. St Patrick's College encourages this awareness and has programs such as personal development education and year level retreats in place to enhance healthy social and emotional growth.
St Patrick's College students choose their own school captains and leadership team and these College leaders, work closely with the school’s Principal and teaching staff. The College offers students access to a number of voluntary committees such as the Interact, Sport, Cultural, Environmental, Wellbeing, Photo Club, Indigenous, Book Club, eSports and St Vincent De Paul committees thereby improving their sense of social responsibility and capability. College camps and retreats add another dimension to our student's social and emotional development.
Physical Development
St Patrick's College places a high priority on the physical aspect of student development. A comprehensive Health and Physical Education program is offered and sports carnivals are integral aspects of the curriculum. They offer Mercy College students developmental opportunities away from the classroom whilst cultivating a healthy competitive spirit at the same time.
Interschool sports competitions across a variety of disciplines including netball, rugby league, touch football, rugby union, AFL, soccer, futsal, hockey, basketball, rowing, lawn bowls and tennis offers students interaction with other school communities.
Homeroom competitions are run throughout the year such as the Mercy 7's Touch Football competition as well as other games played in the hall or pavilion.
Students are encouraged towards adopting a healthy physical outlook at all times by being sun smart and eating a balanced diet.
Cultural Development
It is important for students to have an appreciation of the Arts. In our everyday lives we encounter advertising, films, fashion, interior design and landscaping. Modern music gives many of our students a sense of identity.
Involvement in Art, Music and Drama gives students a good grounding in the history, techniques and practical performance of the arts. It also provides them with confidence.
Extra curricula activities such as the Concert Band, Drum Corp, Handbells, String Ensemble, African Percussion, Choir and Dance Troup; Mackay Eisteddfod; Rock Pop Mime Show; Music Ministry and the Festival of Fashion offer students excellent cultural outlets.
