Confraternity Shield and QISSN Competition

Division 1 Rugby League Grand Final

It was a very cold Wednesday night, but that didn’t stop the St Patricks College Rugby League team from putting together one of their best performances of the year. The team played well in the Grand Final, securing the Terry Hayes Shield for the third year in a row. They defeated a very committed Mackay State High School Team with a final score of 20-8.

The Mackay State High School team got off to a great start, scoring out wide early to put themselves ahead 4 – 0.  The St Pat’s boys stuck to their game plan and held onto the ball, with Toby Thorburn scoring two tries from dummy half to go into the break leading 10 – 4.

The second half started fast and furious, with St Pats scoring first. Mackay High team fired back after some poor discipline from the Pat’s boys, which cost the team field position and another four points, making the score 14 – 8.  The games was very evenly poised until once again, Toby Thorburn broke the game open with his fourth try, giving the Pats boys a 20 – 8 lead with about five minutes to go.  St Pat’s were able to hang on to win a very exciting game.  Toby Thorburn with his four try effort was named Man of the Match with Bailey Black, Jack Howard and Tait Poli also playing well.

Netball competition

Four teams entered the Mackay and District Secondary Netball competition this year. The First VII, Netball Blue, Netball Red and Netball White teams played well throughout the season and enjoyed good games.

The St Patrick’s College Netball Red Team played very well in their grand final against North Mackay State High School. The girls were gracious in defeat with the final score being 11–19.

Meanwhile, the St Patrick’s College First VII defeated Mercy College in the Division A grand final. The girls had been undefeated all season, but the game was a nail biter with a final score of 26-23. Well done teams!

Congratulations to all the girls participating in the competition this year. Thank you to the coaches for their commitment to their teams.

Confraternity Shield and QISSN

I would like to wish both the 2019 QISSN and Confraternity Carnival teams all the best in their upcoming competitions during the first week of the school holidays.  Both teams have been preparing hard and are looking forward to a tough and fun week of competition.  Both carnivals are being held in Bundaberg, with Shalom College hosting the competitions.

Both teams are coming off wins in their last start in Mackay, so hopefully they can take their winning confidence into the carnival. Good luck to both teams and a massive thank you to all the coaching staff, parents and students for all your support leading up to these competitions.

If you are interested in following the teams, both competitions have an App that can be downloaded, that includes the draw and live score updates during the competition (QISSRL for the rugby league and QISSN for the netball).  The App is available from Apple and Android stores.
